Deputy Minister Mare Tops Keeneland's Penultimate Session

Hoxsey, a 5-year-old daughter of Deputy Minister produced from the graded stakes-winning Easy Goer mare Jetto, brought the top price of $65,000 during Thursday's session of the Keeneland's November breeding stock sale.

Purchased by Machmer Hall and Partners, the mare is believed to be in foal from a mating to Gilded Time, last covered by the stallion on May 5. Hip 4042, she was consigned to the sale by Longfield Farm, agent. Jetto earned $82,120 and won the Honeybee Stakes (gr. III).

For the session, Keeneland reported 232 horses sold for a gross of $2,749,200, an average of $11,850 and a median of $8,000. During the comparable session last year, 191 horses sold for a gross of $1,262,600, an average of $6,610, and a median of $3,500. Fifty-eight horses, or 20 % of those offered, did not meet their reserves Thursday, compared to 68 horses, or 26.2 % ,who did not meet their reserves at the comparable session last year.

"There's still a solid market here for the right type of horse," said Keeneland director of sales Geoffrey Russell. "The foals sold well today as did the mares, and if you compare it to the next to the last day of '03, the gross is higher and so is the average."

With one session remaining in the 12-day auction, 2,684 horses have been sold for $278,373,300, an average of $103,716, and a median of $35,000. At this point last year, 2,614 horses had sold for $236,070,900, an average of $90,310, and a median of $32,000.

The sale, set to conclude at the end of business tomorrow, will commence at 10:00 a.m. at the Keeneland sale pavilion in Lexington.
