Shaconage Breezes Toward Start in Cardinal

Shaconage tuned up for her run in Saturday's $150,000 Cardinal Handicap (gr. IIIT) with a good half-mile work Tuesday over Churchill Downs' Matt Win Turf Course. The Mitch Shirota-trained filly breezed four furlongs around the "dogs" in :50.60 over a course rated "good.

Jockey Joe Johnson was aboard for the work by the homebred daughter of El Prado, which registered as the third best of 10 at that distance.
A win by Shaconage in the Cardinal would be her third in a Churchill Downs stakes race this year. During the Spring meet, she won the Argent Mortgage Turf Mile (gr. IIIT) and Locust Grove (gr. IIIT). Most recently she finished sixth, behind Ouija Board, in the VO5 Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT).

"She was too far back and I don't know why," Shirota said of effort in the Breeders' Cup. "She was a little rough in the paddock that day, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. She's a handful and, when she gets that way, she doesn't run her best races."

Shaconage will be reunited with Johnson in Saturday's 1 1/8-mile race.

Other Cardinal hopefuls in action on the turf Tuesday include:
Angela's Love- the Dale Romans-trained winner of Ellis Park's Gardenia (gr. III) on the main track breezed four furlongs in :51.40 under jockey Tammy Fox. The Cardinal would mark her turf debut and she is also nominated to next week's Falls City Handicap (gr. II) on the dirt.

Fun House - The Steve Asmussen-trained mare covered five furlongs in 1:03.60 under jockey Donnie Meche. Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC's' daughter of Prized won the Buena Vista (gr. II) at Santa Anita in February.

Classic Stamp, winner of the Canadian Handicap at Woodbine and third to the Bobby Frankel-trained Commercante in the E.P. Taylor(Can-I) over the Toronto track, arrived at Churchill Downs on Monday to prepare for the Cardinal.

Other likely starters in the 1 1/8-mile race for fillies and mares ages 3 & up include Aud, Beret, May Gator, Chance Dance, Changing World, and Noisette.
