Velazquez Has Commanding Lead in Jockeys' Standings

With seven weeks remaining in the calendar and racing year, jockey John Velazquez is well ahead of Edgar Prado and Jerry Bailey in the race to be leading rider by earnings.

Velazquez, who is now only the second rider to surpass the $20-million single season earnings mark, has 2004 purses totaling $21,492,039 through racing as of Sunday, Nov. 14 according to statistics from Equibase. (The Equibase figures are for North American racing, but also include some international races such as the Dubai World Cup.)

The all-time record of $23,354,960 was set by Bailey in 2003.

Velazquez has a commanding lead over Edgar Prado, who is in second with purses of $17,398,645. Bailey, with $14,768,589, is third.

In the trainer's race, Todd Pletcher is first with stable earnings of $16,461,386, followed by Bobby Frankel, the top money-winning trainer for the past two years and champion Eclipse trainer for the past four years, who has $15,532,691.
