Team Valor Stables and Robert J. Wilson's Added Edge won the $100,000 Michael G. Schaefer Mile Saturday night by the slimmest of margins over Coach Jimi Lee.

The 4-year-old Smart Strike   colt advanced along the rail in the stretch for rider Ramsey Zimmerman before putting a nose in front at the wire in 1:35 4/5.

The victory was the icing on the cake for Team Valor, as their entry River Belle won the Mrs. Revere Stakes (gr. IIT) earlier in the day at Churchill Downs. It was equally special for Zimmerman, who returned to racing action for the first time since sustaining five broken ribs in an accident several weeks ago.

Jockey Bill Troilo and Perfect Cut broke well from the gate in the one-mile event, guiding the field of six into the first turn. The A.P. Indy colt maintained a considerable advantage through the backstretch while Coach Jimi Lee and Added Edge kept the leader within their sights. Rider Carlos Marquez Jr. began his assault on Perfect Cut entering the final turn, and collared the George Arnold-trained pacesetter in the stretch. Zimmerman opted to move Added Edge to the rail and also slipped by to engage Coach Jimi Lee.

In the stretch the two horses fought neck and neck, exchanging bumps several times before hitting the wire. After relinquishing the lead, Perfect Cut finished third.

"He didn't show any hesitation," Zimmerman said of the winner. "This horse wasn't taking no for an answer. He dragged me to the winner's circle tonight."

Trained by Dale Romans, Added Edge increased his career bankroll to $462,126.

In the second race, the $40,000 Frances Slocum Stakes, Senorita Ziggy and Vincente Flores fought off Ellens Lucky Star in the stretch to win the 1 1/16-mile event in 1:44.4. The 6-year-old mare by Senor Speedy won the $40,000 Merrillville Stakes in October at Hoosier Park for Plum Lake Racing LLC.
