Blackdoun and Special Ring failed to handle a yielding turf course in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Lone Star Park on Oct. 30, finishing seventh and thirteenth, respectively, but the race took so little out of them they could both return later this month at Hollywood Park.
Trainer Julio Canani, who trains both, said he is considering Special Ring for the $400,000 Citation Handicap on Nov. 27 and Blackdoun for the $500,000 Hollywood Derby on Nov. 28. Both Turf Festival races are grade I events on the grass.
"The track was too soft for them, and Special Ring lost a shoe, but they're both doing good," said Canani Wednesday. Canani said he is also considering Tsigane for the Citation, a 1 1/16-mile race elevated to grade I status for the first time.
Canani also expects a nice addition to his barn from the Turf Festival. Famed French trainer Maurice Zilber plans to ship Sunny Sky, a recent listed winner in France, to Southern California for the $100,000 Generous Stakes for 2-year-olds on Nov.27 and transfer the colt to Canani after the race.
Zilber used a similar approach last year with Amorama, who made her United States debut in the Miesque Stakes, was shifted to Canani and won the Del Mar Oaks (gr. IT) in August. Blackdoun, Amorama and Sunny Sky are all owned by Woodside Farm and Marsha Naify. Woodside is owned by Zilber's nephew, Laurent Zilber, and his wife, Christina Naify Zilber.
Canani said that Amorama recently worked six furlongs in 1:13 and may try dirt for the first time in her next race.
Canani also said that Sweet Catomine, who wrapped up an apparent championship with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), is jogging but probably will not return until 2005.
