California Stallion Flying Continental Dead

Flying Continental, the sire of 19 stakes winners, died in his paddock today at John Harris' Harris Farms near Coalinga, Calif. He was 18.

By Flying Paster -- Continental Girl, by Transworld, Flying Continental is the sire of Continental Red, the winner of the 2002 San Luis Rey Handicap (gr. IIT) and $1,172,558 to date. His other stakes winners include Irisheyesareflying, a grade III winner of $715,036.

Flying Continental began his racing career for his breeder, the late Jack Kent Cooke, when he owned Elmendorf Farm near Lexington. He was sold in October 1991 to bloodstock agent Nancy Yearsley, who later sold a part-interest in him to Ross Harris.

Yearsley and Harris continued to own Flying Continentalduring his stallion career. He has sired the earners of more than $13 million. This year, he was bred to 27 mares. His stud fee this year was $3,500.

Flying Continental was a grade I winner of $1.8 million, his wins including the 1990 Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) and Strub Stakes (gr. I).
