Soldier Hollow Marches to Premio Roma Win
German trainer Peter Schiergen won his third Italian group I victory in the past three weeks when Soldier Hollow rallied to capture the $425,000 Premio Roma at Capannelle Racetrack in Rome Sunday.Soldier Hollow, sent off at odds of nearly 5-1, finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of Imperial Dancer, the winner of the last year's Premio Roma. After registering his fourth consecutive graded race, the 4-year-old son of In The Wings is being pointed for the Hong Kong Cup Dec. 12 at Sha Tin, according to Baron Helmut von Finck, who bred and owns the winner.Showing an affinity for heavy going, Soldier Hollow pulled away from the pack in the final 200 meters while holding off the late running Imperial Dancer. Pacesetting Gateman finished third in a field of 10. The final time for the 1 1/4-mile event was 2:02.70.Execute, the favorite from France, finished sixth. Two other German-based horses, Eagle Rise and Martillo, battled in the Premio Ribot (Ity-II), with Eagle Rise prevailing by a short neck. Winning jockey Andreas Suborics capped a big weekend. He was aboard the 2-year-old filly Paita in a group I win Saturday at Saint-Cloud.
