Breeders' Cup TV Ratings Hit All-Time Low

NBC's coverage of the Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships from Lone Star Park in Texas registered the lowest television ratings in the 21-year history of the event. The national ratings reached only a 1.4 share, down 22% from last year's 1.85 rating. Each ratings point represents 1.08-million households.

The five-hour telecast, which ran from 1-6 p.m. EDT, was up against stiff college football competition, as CBS televised the Georgia vs. Florida game, and ABC had a doubleheader, with most of the country receiving Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State followed by Michigan vs. Michigan State.

Breeders' Cup viewership peaked in the final half hour of the telecast, which featured the running of the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I). The ratings reached 2.15 for that segment. Between 1 and 5 p.m., the ratings remained between 1.23 and 1.54, growing to 1.74 between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
