Kona Gold, defeating Honest Lady in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, could return in the Palos Verdes.
Horse of the Year nominee Kona Gold is scheduled to breeze Monday or Tuesday in advance of his first start of the year in next Sunday's grade II Palos Verdes, according to trainer Bruce Headley.
Nine older sprinters have been nominated to next Sunday's 49th running of the Grade II, $200,000 Palos Verdes Handicap, including Breeders' Cup Sprint champion and Horse of the Year finalist Kona Gold.
Julius Zolezzi's Big Jag has been nominated by trainer Timothy Pinfield and the 8-year-old gelding appears set to renew a rivalry with Kona Gold in which Big Jag got under the wire first in three of their five 1999 meetings.
Also nominated and expected to start is Desperado Stables' speedy Freespool for trainer Ted West. Freespool is coming off a front-running win in the Grade III El Conejo Handicap on Dec. 31.
