The Barretts mixed sale held Oct. 25-26 at the Hinds Pavilion at Fairplex Park in Pomona, Calif., showed sharp declines over the same sale a year ago despite the dispersal of seven horses of racing age from the partnership of Noctis Stable, Neil Papiano and Steve Taub. Only one horse, stakes-winner Cheiron, sold for more than $100,000 when the hammer fell at $165,000 for the 3-year-old.
Universal Bloodstock purchased Cheiron from the consignment of his trainer, Kristin Mulhall. The California-bred son of Maria's Mon
won the Snow Chief Stakes at Hollywood Park in April and was second in the Sunshine Millions Dash in January. Cheiron finished last in the Cal Cup Sprint in his last start Oct. 16.
Overall, 419 horses sold for gross receipts of $2,274,300 over the two-day sale, a decline of 20.5%. The average of $5,428 represented a 2.7% dip while the median of $2,500 dropped 21.9%. A total of 100 horses were withdrawn and another 120 were listed as RNA.
Universal Bloodstock is a partnership of Michael Mulhall and Papiano, as well as several other unnamed partners. The group also purchased Golden Gate Breeders' Cup Handicap hero Tronare for $37,000 as well as track-record setter Tough Game for $28,000. Kristin Mulhall will continue to train the trio.
"We'll look for an allowance race for (Cheiron) at Hollywood Park pretty soon," the trainer said. "We'll let him get his confidence back up and try stakes again after that."
J. Paul Reddam paid $60,000 for the 8-year-old broodmare Flying Lesson, who was the top-priced non-dispersal horse in the auction. The stakes-placed daughter of Flying Continental
, consigned by Andy Havens Bloodstock as agent for the estate of Max Walters, is in foal to Beau Genius
Universal Bloodstock was the leading buyer, spending $230,000 for three horses. Mulhall was the leading consigner, the seven horses selling for $307,500. Mary Knight, agent, was the leading non-dispersal consignor, selling 40 for $208,700.
