Less than 24 hours after winning the Breeders' Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) with Ghostzapper, trainer Robert Frankel and jockey Javier Castellano teamed to win the 52nd running of the $111,200 Sport Page (gr. III) with Mass Media at Aqueduct Sunday.
"I've liked this horse for a long time," Castellano said about Mass Media. "He always works good in the mornings."
Additionally, it was the second victory on the Aqueduct race card for Frankel-Castellano, who teamed to win the fourth race with 3-year-old Derby Fever. Both Mass Media and Derby Fever are owned by Gary and Mary West.
"This horse has been doing really good," said Jose Cuevas, the assistant to Frankel. "He beat some nice horses today."
Mass Media took the lead at the top of the stretch when he passed tiring Voodoo. He pulled away to win the seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up in 1:21. He paid $18.60 to win.
"He put me in a good spot," Castellano said. "I knew I had Voodoo turning for home. When I asked him, he took off."
Mass Media, a 3-year-old dark bay Kentucky-bred colt by Touch Gold
out of Sultry Allure (by Forty Niner), earned $66,720 is now 5-0-0 from seven starts with earnings of $161,550.
Lion Tamer, ridden and trained by multiple 2004 Breeders' Cup winners John Velazquez and Todd Pletcher, respectively, finished second. Gygistar, under Joe Bravo, was third.
Bred in Kentucky by Live Oak Stud, Mass Media was sold for $65,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale.
