Silver Charm Sold to Japan
Syndicate manager Robert Clay announced today that Three Chimneys stallion Silver Charm has been purchased by the Japan Racing Association to stand in Japan in 2005, subject to customary blood testing and quarantine requirements."We received an offer that, at my stage in life, I could not turn down," said Bob Lewis, who had retained 75% ownership of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness (gr. I) winner raced by him and wife Beverly. "The contract gives us the right of first refusal to purchase him if he is ever sold, so that we can ensure his well-being, and provide that he may return to Three Chimneys Farm upon his retirement. The purchase price will not be disclosed."Rollin Baugh represented the buyer in the transaction.Silver Charm, a 10-year-old son of Silver Buck out of the Poker mare Bonnie's Poker, is the sire of grade II winner Preachinatthebar and graded stakes-placed runners Consecrate, Charming Jim, and Deb's Charm."We will miss Silver Charm," said Three Chimneys president Dan Rosenberg. "This is one of the tough things about being in this business. And we know his fans will miss being able to visit him here. We will, however, keep him on our Web page and have already made arrangements to get photos of him periodically and to be able to follow his progeny as they are born and race in Japan. We'll post the photos and progeny information on our Web site."Silver Charm earned an Eclipse Award as best 3-year-old male in 1997 and was champion in Dubai after winning the 1998 Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). He retired with earnings of $6,944,369 and is currently sixth on the list of all-time leading North American money winners."He is in quarantine now, and we ask people to understand that federal regulations will not permit him visitors while he is in quarantine," said Rosenberg.Other Kentucky Derby winners that have gone to Japan include such recent ones as War Emblem, Charismatic, and Ferdinand. Charismatic also raced for the Lewises.
