Cheiron, who captured the Snow Chief Stakes earlier this year at Hollywood Park, sold for $165,000 Monday to top the opening session of the Barretts October mixed sale in Southern California. Universal Bloodstock purchased the 3-year-old son of Maria's Mon -- Fortunee, by Wild Again, from trainer Kristin Mulhall, agent.

Universal also acquired the session's second-highest-priced horse, Tronare, winner of this year's Golden Gate Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) from Mulhall, agent. Tronare is a 6-year-old son of Stuka and also a group winner in his native Chile.

Barretts reported that 204 horses were sold for a gross of $1,091,500, an average price of $5,350, and a median price of $2,500. Sixty-one (23.0%) of the 265 horses offered failed to find new homes.

The last of the auction's two sessions is scheduled for Tuesday.
