Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies candidates Runway Model, Dance Away Capote and Sis City were among those putting in their final major workouts Monday and are being prepared to ship to Grand Prairie, Texas, for Saturday's race.
Naveed Chowhan's Alcibades (gr. II) winner Runway Model
worked five furlongs in 1:00 3/5 over a fast track Monday morning at Churchill Downs with Dean Butler up. The work was the sixth fastest of 64 at the distance.
"She worked real good," said trainer Bernie Flint, who will be saddling his third Breeders' Cup starter in the daughtr of Petionville
. "She will be shipping tomorrow morning."
Rafael Bejarano, the nation's leading rider in wins this year, will make his Breeders' Cup debut aboard Runway Model, a half-sister to Mambo Train, who ran 11th in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Dance Away Capote
, a daughter of Capote who is scheduled to board a Dallas-bound plane in Louisville Tuesday afternoon, would provide trainer Graham Motion with his first Breeders' Cup starter.
Dance Away Capote breezed a half mile in :50 1/5 Monday morning over Keeneland's new all-weather training track.
"It was just a light breeze. After her effort in the Alcibiades, she's fit," said Motion, who will also saddle Film Maker for the Filly & Mare Turf and Better Talk Now for the Turf.
Dance Away Capote finished fourth in the Alcibiades at Keeneland in her last start Oct. 8, but her trainer was extremely impressed with her performance. She was beaten by less than a length after breaking from a far outside post position.
"She had to overcome a lot. She had a terrible post," said Motion from Keeneland. "Everybody's talking about what a bad trip Sense of Style had in the Alciabides, but nobody had a worse trip than my filly."
The on-again off-again saga of the Frizette Stakes (gr. I) third-place finisher Sis City
appears to be back on after owner Sandy Goldfarb called Breeders' Cup officials saying the daughter of Slew City Slew
was going to be shipped to Lone Star despite reports over the weekend to the contrary.
Trainer Rick Dutrow breezed Sis City five furlongs Monday morning at Aqueduct in 1:03 1/5. He termed the workout as a "basic" exercise and that he had yet to make final plans about flying from New York or who the jockey would be.
"The owners all want to go, and if we can get these things worked out, I'll be excited to be there, too," said Dutrow. "I can't answer too many questions right now, but I'll know more on entry day."
In addition to Goldfarb, New York Yankees manager Joe Torre is among the partners.
In another Breeders' Cup workout outside Texas Monday, BC Sprint contender Cuvee
drilled four furlongs at Churchill Downs in :47 4/5 for trainer Steve Asmussen, who was there for the move. Holding down the fort at his Texas operation is assistant trainer Darren Fleming, who indicated that Cuvee would ship into Lone Star Park on Tuesday afternoon.
Fleming said that a jockey for the Kentucky-bred son of Carson City
has not been named. Shane Sellers rode Cuvee to second-place finishes in his last two starts, but that jockey has since stopped riding. Silver Tree
, the Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. IIT) winner had his final formal work for the Mile Monday, but trainer Bill Mott said there was a discrepancy between the time recorded for the move by Churchill Downs clockers and assistant trainer Kenny McCarthy.
"Kenny got her in roughly 48 and 3 [48 3/5]," Mott said from New York. "They got her in 47 and 1 [47 1/5]."
Mott said McCarthy told him Silver Tree, who will be ridden by Edgar Prado, went the last three-eighths in 36 and "galloped out nicely."
The 4-year-old colt is scheduled to fly to Texas from Kentucky on Thursday with McCarthy. Mott is to arrive Friday.
The 7-year-old gelding Special Ring
worked five furlongs in :58 3/5 Monday at Santa Anita under exercise rider Jose Dominguez.
"He looked super," said trainer Julio Canani. "He went the first two furlongs in :24 and the last three furlongs in :34 3/5. He galloped out strong."
Victor Espinoza will ride the gelding for Texas owners Prestonwood Farm. He will be flown to Texas on Wednesday.
