Sarafan, Stay Forever Defect From Breeders' Cup

Saturday's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships lost two more participants Monday when Sarafan was withdrawn from the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) due to an injury and Stay Forever was taken out of the VO5 Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT).

Breeders' Cup officials said trainer Neil Drysdale informed them Sarafan had filling in his right front leg and after banging his leg on a stall wall over the weekend.

"We are not quite sure how or where," Drysdale said of the incident. "He had some inflammation in his right front (leg), but it (the inflammation) has since left. It doesn't appear to be anything too serious, but we can't be running in a race like this under the circumstances."

Owned by Gary Tanaka, the 7-year-old son of Lear Fan was coming into the Breeders' Cup off a second in the Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Championship (gr. IT).

Meanwhile, trainer Martin Wolfson reported to Breeders' Cup officials that Stay Forever, a homebred racing for Santa Cruz Ranch, went lame and would not be shipped to Lone Star Park.

A 7-year-old Stack mare, Stay Forever has won 10 of 17 starts, all on turf, and earned $910.399.
