Nine Jockeys to Battle in Lone Star Championship
Nine of the top jockeys in the world are set to square off Oct. 28 in the International Jockey Championship at Lone Star Park.There are three races in the competition -- six, seven, and nine -- on an 11-race program that kicks off the final four days of the Lone Star Breeders' Cup meet. The World Thoroughbred Championships is scheduled for Oct. 30.The jockeys in the contest are Jerry Bailey, Pat Day, Kent Desormeaux, Edgar Prado, and Jose Santos from the United States, and Frankie Dettori, Kieren Fallon, Jamie Spencer, and Christophe Soumillion from Europe.Riders will earn 12 points for a win, six points for a second, four points for a third, three points for a fourth, and one point for a late scratch, non-starter, or no-contest race. Lone Star, as usual, will offer a special wager tied to jockey performance.The wager will be based on each jockeys' performance. For betting purposes, each grouping of three horses ridden by the same jockey will be assigned a betting number in the program. Win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta wagering will be offered on the championship.The races in the contest are a $40,000 starter allowance test for fillies and mares at one mile on the turf, a $60,000 starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs, and a $50,000 starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on the grass.The Oct. 28 program also will feature the first running of the $50,000 Lone Star Park Juvenile Fillies Stakes at six furlongs.
