Culinary, winner of the Arlington-Washington Lassie (gr. III) in her last start, breezed five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 at Lone Star Park Saturday in preparation for the Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I).
The daughter of El Amante trained by Mike Stidham for owner Jack H. Smith III Thoroughbreds worked in company with stablemate Delusion.
"We were not looking for anything too strenuous, just a confidence builder," Stidham said. "Basically, it was just what we wanted."
Regular rider Carlos Marquez was aboard the filly who broke her maiden by 11 lengths before her stakes triumph.
Meanwhile, the makeup of the race took on a new complexion Saturday when two horses were withdrawn, opening the window for the two on the preference list to draw into the 14-horse field.
Pam Blatz-Murff, senior vice president for Breeders' Cup operations, said trainer Al Stall Jr. withdrew Enduring Will
from Juvenile Fillies consideration after the daughter of Arch
spiked a fever of 103 degrees. Because the filly would miss several days of training and would be treated with medication, her ability to run in the World Thoroughbred Championships were compromised by the setback.
Although Breeders' Cup officials have not been notified by the owners, Blatz-Murf said that based on published reports and other indications are that Sis City
will not be shipped to Texas.
The defections mean that Culture Clash
and Quiet Honor
draw into the field for the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile Fillies.
A daughter of Petionville
trained by Marcelo Polanco, Culture Clash has one victory and a fourth in two career starts.
Quiet Honor, a daughter of Real Quiet, rolled to a five-length triumph at Santa Anita in her only career start.
