Closing Argument Makes Case for In Reality

(from Calder report)
New York invader Closing Argument is one of the choices in the $400,000 In Reality Stakes for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin with jockey Cornelio Velasquez aboard Saturday at Calder Race Course.

A bulky field of 14 was entered in the 1 1/16-mile test.

The In Reality, for 2-year-old progeny of Florida stallions, along with the $400,000 My Dear Girl, highlight the $1.5 million Festival of the Sun program.

A son of leading freshman sire Successful Appeal  , Philip and Marcia Cohen's Closing Argument was a $100,000 OBS April 2-year-old purchase and has won both of his starts: his debut at Saratoga and the $250,000 NATC Futurity at Delaware Park. The Cohens' Booklet invaded Calder to win the 2001 In Reality for trainer Steve Klesaris.

Leading the local contingent for the In Reality will be Cin Cin, owned by The Posse, with regular rider Abdiel Toribio. Trained by Bill White, the son of Precocity has won all three of his starts since finishing third in his debut, including the Affirmed Division of the FSS. The $32,000 OBS April 2-year-old purchase stretched out to win the one-mile Foolish Pleasure Stakes in his last start.

Trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr. sends out a team of three in the In Reality, led by Bea Oxenberg and his wife Laurie's B.B. Best, who was the division leader early in the meet after winning his first two starts impressively.

Jockey Eddie Castro rides B.B. Best, a Yes It's True   colt purchased for $150,000 at the OBS February 2-year-old sales. B.B. Best has been odds-on in all five of his starts, including a victory in the Dr. Fager division of the FSS. He finished a disappointing third last out behind Cin Cin in the Affirmed.

Plesa's other two runners for the In Reality are Thorobeam Farm and Henry Mast's Favre, Manny Aguilar, and Trilogy Stable's Qureall, Jerry Bailey. Favre is a Montbrook colt that finished second in both the Dr. Fager and Affirmed. Qureall is by Yes It's True and won his only start on Sept. 25.
