Rain Does Not Deter Breeders' Cup Horses from Working
Despite continued rainy weather in the Southern California area and another wet track at Santa Anita Tuesday morning, a pair of Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships-bound horses were out for preparations for Racing's Championship Day.Under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., VO5 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) hopeful Moscow Burning drilled a bullet five furlongs in :59 4/5 around the "dogs" over the main track labeled good. Trainer Jim Cassidy said the daughter of Moscow Ballet, who won the Sheepshead Bay Handicap (gr. IIT) in May and placed in four other graded stakes this year, was supplemented to the 1 1/4 –mile turf event and pre-entered on Monday."She's doing fine," Cassidy said of the Dallas VanKempen and Michael Nentwig color-bearer. "It was a good work. She wasn't too happy about that racetrack, but she handled it."According to Cassidy, Moscow Burning and fellow Filly & Mare Turf supplemental entry Katdogawn will ship to Lone Star Park on Monday and will get their final preparations over the Lone Star Park surface next week.Former claimer Moscow Burning has won eight of 18 career starts and has banked $712,165.Prestonwood Farm's NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) candidate Special Ring also went five furlongs on a good Santa Anita main track around the dogs, posting a final time of 1:00 with regular exercise rider Jose Dominguez aboard. Trainer Julio Canani was pleased with the move, which was the second-fastest of nine who went the distance on the day."He picked it up nicely in the last part," trainer Julio Canani said. "I caught him in :59 4/5, three quarters in 1:13 flat and seven-eighths in 1:27 2/5 with a 160 pound rider. He's doing awesome right now."Special Ring hasn't raced since winning the July 25 Eddie Read Handicap (gr. IT) at Del Mar. He is set to leave for Lone Star Park on Monday following his final pre-Breeders' Cup workout at Santa Anita on Sunday.
