OBSC Preferred Sessions End With Average Decline

Adena Springs South went to $105,000 for Backatem, a 4-year-old stakes winning daughter of Notebook sold as a broodmare prospect, to top the second of two consignor preferred sessions at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Winter Mixed Sale. Consigned by Summerfield, Agent, Backatem was a stakes winner of $89,750 and is a full-sister to graded stakes-placed
The next highest priced broodmare was Hip No. 490, Affirm Foundation, an 8-year-old mare by Affirmed out of Mighty Spectacular, by Spectacular Bid, in foal to Storm Creek. Consigned by Nancy J. Bauman, Agent, she was sold to Thomas J. Gallo for $60,000.
The session's other highlights included Hip No. 321, Starry Eyed Deb, a 5-year-old mare by Star de Naskra in foal to Storm Creek. Summerfield, Agent for Legacy Farm consigned the half-sister to stakes winners Majestic Nasr and Tammi's Pal, sold to Jewel Wilson for $55,000. Hip No. 271, Quiet City, consigned by Lakland LLC, went to Harry L. Landry, Agent for $50,000. The 6-year-old mare by Carson City out of stakes-placed Calm Dancer was sold in foal to Stormin Fever.
The session's high-priced yearling was Hip No. 453, a filly by Wild Rush out of stakes winner Let Fly, consigned by Marablue Farm, Agent and sold to P.A. Everard, Agent for Frank Bertolino for $37,000.
A total of 140 horses were sold in the session, grossing $1,785,300, compared with 193 with grossing $2,843,100 in the second consignor preferred session in 2000. The average price was $12,752 compared with of $14,731 in last year's second Consignor Preferred session. Adena Springs South was the day's leading buyer with four horses, including the session topper, for a total of $166,000. Tom Durant was next with five for $95,700 followed by Jewel Wilson with two for $75,000.
For the two Preferred sessions combined, 295 horses grossed $3,726,200, compared with 394 bringing $5,666,500 last year. The overall average was $12,631, compared with 2000's $14,382. Adena Springs South led all buyers with four for $166,000. Tom Durant took home seven for $155,700 followed by R Bar S Thoroughbreds with five for $126,000.
