Grade I Winner Perfect Soul Retired

Perfect Soul, a grade I winner, millionaire, and Canadian champion, has been retired from racing. The 6-year-old son of Sadler's Wells ran unplaced in defense of his title in the Oct. 9 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

"We were going to retire him after the Breeders' Cup anyway, but he came down with a temperature after the race and wouldn't eat for several days," said trainer Roger Attfield. "We felt that it wouldn't be fair running him. Other than that he's as sound as a bell of brass."

Perfect Soul, a homebred for Charles Fipke, was first or second in a dozen of 21 starts and earned $1,527,764. He not only won the 2003 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile the year he was Canada's champion grass male, but also the King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap (Can-IIT). This year, he captured the Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) in course-record time of 1:33.54 at the Keeneland spring meeting.

An Irish-bred, Perfect Soul is out of the Secretariat mare Ball Chairman. Breeding plans have not been decided.
