Prominent central Kentucky stallion Kingmambo won't be finishing the breeding season at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles. Farish said Thursday the 10-year-old son of Mr. Prospector developed a stomach infection and was sent to Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic about three weeks ago.

“There was no operation,.and they gave him some antibiotics,” Farish said. “He came back to the farm after about a week, and wasn't quite himself when he started breeding again. We bred him to about four mares, but he just wasn't quite as aggressive. The vets recommended that we stop breeding him because they didn't want any undue stress placed on him.”

Farish said Kingmambo likely developed the stomach ailment after eating some wet grass. “A lot of horses get colic that way,” he said. Farish said the horse has been taken off medication and is doing fine.

Among the leading sires in North America, Kingmambo has sired 16 stakes winners, including Japanese Horse of the Year El Condor Pasa, Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Lemon Drop Kid, and this year's Sagitta Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) winner King's Best.
