Edited release from Calder Race Course
Calder Race Course president Ken Dunn Monday announced the appointment of Michael D. Abes as vice president and general manager for the Thoroughbred track in Miami, Fla. Abes has been treasurer at Calder since 1991 and will retain that position when he assumes his new duties.

The office of vice president and general manager at Calder became open when Randall Soth was named president of Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, La. on September 30. Both will assume their new duties as soon as Churchill Downs Inc. completes the purchase of Fair Grounds, which is scheduled to occur on or before Oct. 15, 2004. Calder is also owned by Churchill Downs Inc.

"I feel that this is a great opportunity for me," said Abes. "It's the best of both worlds as I get to take on new responsibilities and challenges while at the same time remain at Calder, which is home to me. Randy has done a wonderful job here over the years and I'm happy to be in a position to build on what he has accomplished."

Abes has served as the chief financial officer for Calder Race Course since 1991. Prior to his affiliation with Calder, Abes worked with Mark Shron & Co. in New York while successfully completing his examination for status as a certified public accountant. After two years, he transferred to the Miami office of Deloitte and Touche, where he specialized in management consulting and business combinations. During his three years with that company, he supervised the services provided to Calder Race Course, Tropical Park Inc. and Catoctin International Racing Corporation, as well as other major clients, in the areas of audit, tax and consulting. He later took the position of controller with Catoctin and eventually was named treasurer of the company's horseracing operations, which at that time included Calder Race Course.
