Wagering for Maryland Million Nears Mark

Wagering during the Maryland Million at Pimlico totaled $6.5 million Saturday, just off the day's record of $6.6 million, according to figures released by Maryland Jockey Club Sunday.

The $4,642,444 bet on the Pimlico card was a record for Maryland Million races.

"While we know the late change to Pimlico provided some hardship, we are proud of the efforts of our collective staffs and volunteers," said Jim Gagliano, executive vice president of Maryland racing operations. "Guest satisfaction was high and will provide us with a solid platform to expand the exposure of this event when we return it to Laurel next year."

A total of 111 horses raced on Saturday's program and was represented by 40 stallions. Not For Love  , Citidancer and Yarrow Brae each produced two winners on the 12-race card.

"It is a testimony to the quality of the Maryland stallions," added Gagliano. "This year's races were competitive and compared favorably to graded events of similar purse value."

The pioneering Maryland Million was introduced in 1986.
