Crusader Sword Mare Tops OBSC First Session

Proud Crusader, Hip No. 182, brought a final bid of $67,000 to top the opening session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2001 Winter Mixed Sale. Consigned by Double S Farm, Agent, the 7-year-old Crusader Sword mare, in foal to Gilded Time, was sold to R Bar S Thoroughbreds. Proud Crusader is out of stakes winner Very Proud and is a half-sister to stakes winner Proud and True as well as stakes placed Proud Proud Proud and Cut Proud.
The session's other highlights included Hip No. 218, Ranba, a 6-year-old broodmare prospect by Relaunch out of stakes winner Ambo, consigned by Cloverleaf Farm, Agent and sold to Winstar Farm for $55,000. Jimmy Miranda, Agent went to $51,000 for Hip No. 129, Splashing Fancy, a 10-year-old mare by Bucksplasher out of stakes winner Square Key Hour. Consigned by Summerfield, Agent, Splashing Fancy is in foal to Grand Slam.
The session's high priced yearling was Hip No. 190, a colt by Notebook out of stakes producer Wancha, consigned by Cardinal Hill Farm (Carol and Norman Casse) Agent and sold to Journeyman Bloodstock (Brent Fernung) Agent for $50,000. the colt is a half-brother to record setting graded winner Isitingood. The session's high priced yearling filly was Hip No. 103, by Storm Creek consigned by Sue Vacek, Agent and sold to Stephen Horne for $33,000.
For the day, a total of 155 horses brought $1,940,900 in the first of two Consignor Preferred sessions, compared with 201 horses grossing $2,823,400 in the corresponding session a year ago. The average price was $12,522, compared with 2000's $14,047 average. The 78 horses that went unsold Monday represented 33.4% of the total through the ring. R Bar S Thoroughbreds was the session's leading buyer, taking home four head for $118,500. Stephen Horne was next with three for $70,500, followed by Diamond Three with two for a total of $60,000.
An auction of stallion seasons held immediately after the session raised $148,000 for the benefit of Florida Thoroughbred Charities, Inc. after raising $58,000 last night at the Silent Auction at Ramada Inn.
