Breeders' Cup Possible After Enduring Will's Silver Spur Romp

(from Lone Star Park report)
An eye-catching 10-length romp in Friday's $100,000 Silver Spur Breeders' Cup Stakes at Lone Star Park may have earned Enduring Will a spot in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) four weeks from now.

Over the host track for this year's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Enduring Will dazzled in her two-turn debut with a sweeping move on the final turn to easily win the opening night feature at Lone Star Park's 19-date fall Breeders' Cup meeting.

The convincing victory by the Louisiana-based invader – her second in three lifetime starts – will certainly tempt owner/breeder Michael Rainier of Dallas and trainer Al Stall Jr. to return on horse racing's championship day.

"Right now, she's going back to Shreveport and we'll give it some good thought," Stall said. "We'll take a hard look at it, and Mike and I will make a call. My gut feeling is yes."

Enduring Will ran one mile in 1:39.49 after a thunderstorm left the racetrack "sloppy." Breaking from the outside post in the field of nine 2-year-old fillies, she was reserved early by jockey Lonnie Meche. After early leader Ketchmewhereyoucan clocked a half-mile in :47.41, Enduring Will made up six lengths in the third quarter-mile of the race, moving from sixth to first.

"She was picking them up," Meche said. "All I did was encourage her at the head of the lane and she got the job done. She felt like a million bucks. I always thought she had all the techniques to be a good filly. Everything she does, she does so easy. Working in the mornings she impressed me so much and I've never doubted that she could win this race tonight because I knew she was that kind of filly."

Enduring Will paid $5.60 to win as the 9-5 favorite. Kristin's Charm, a 20-1 outsider, nosed Berdelia for second. Berdilia's jockey Casey Lambert claimed foul against the winner, but it was dismissed by the stewards.

The $60,000 winner's share of the purse padded Enduring Will's earnings to $78,800.
