Retired Trainer George H. Krikorian Sr. Dead
Retired trainer George H. Krikorian Sr., died Aug. 29 at his home in Vista, Calif., following a bout with cancer. He was 89.Krikorian held a lifelong passion for horses and spent summers at Rockingham Park learning the trade. In 1960, he purchased his first horse and began training full time. At the time, Krikorian's mentor was Harry Cornwell, a respected veteran conditioner from Nebraska.In the 1960s and '70s, Krikorian trained at Rockingham Park, Suffolk Downs, Narragansett, and Lincoln Downs, occasionally venturing into Canada and upstate New York. One of his runners, Grey Corner, became a local champion. In 1980, Krikorian moved to California and trained for one of his sons, Harry.Although he retired in 1986, Krikorian enjoyed going to track, especially Del Mar, where he took in the races a week before his passing.Another of Krikorian's sons, George Krikorian Jr., campaigns a highly successful stable. He has campaigned graded stakes winners Starrer, Makeup Artist, and Hollywood Story.In addition to his sons, Krikorian's survivors include another son, Richard. Krikorian was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, Alice, and a son, Michael.
