Flamethrowintexan, a former competitor on the Southern California circuit who has found a home in the northwest, assumed the lead at the quarter pole from pacesetter Don'tsellmeshort and drew off to an 8 1/2-length victory in Sunday's $325,500 British Columbia Derby (Can-III) at Hastings Park.

The second choice in the field of 12 at odds of 3-1, Flamethrowintexan was guided by Ricky Frazier to his first graded stakes win while completing the 1 1/8-mile test for sophomores in 1:49 2/5 on a fast track.

Lord Samarai, an 18-1 shot ridden by David Wilson, and Strike Em Hard, 17-1 with Constant Montpellier aboard, were second and third, respectively.

Gotaghostofachance, the 2-1 choice, stalked the pace but weakened after six furlongs to finish seventh.

Trained by Kay Penny Cooper for owners Grasshopper Stable Inc., Flamethrowintexan prompted the pace from off the rail in second as Don'tsellmeshort clipped along in :22 1/5, :45 3/5 and 1:10 2/5. He seized the lead soon after that, completing the mile in 1:36 while opening up a five-length edge and was never threatened.

Lord Samarai closed from last after six furlongs to rally six wide down the stretch and gain second by 2 1/4 lengths over Strike Em Hard, who nipped 20-1 Caboo Prospector for third by a neck.

Flamethrowintexan ran his record to 8-2-0 in 12 starts. He had a five-race winning streak snapped in his previous outing when second in the Emerald Downs Breeders' Cup Derby Sept. 6.

He was competing solidly on the Southern California circuit before being claimed away from trainer Mike Harrington for $62,500 at Hollywood Park in June. During his winning streak, he captured the Seattle Slew Breeders' Cup Handicap July 31 at Emerald Downs and has won three of his four tries in the northwest.

The victory was worth $191,400 (Canadian) and improved his career earnings to $355,088.

He paid $8, $4.10 and $4.30. Lord Samarai returned $15.50 and $11.30 while completing a $164.30 exacta. Strike Em Hard, $8.20, combined for a $1,689 trifecta payoff.
