Jorge Chavez, who injured his shoulder in the preceding race, took off his mount in the ninth and final heat at Belmont Park on Thursday, resulting in the late scratch of Soup Spoon.

Chavez injured his shoulder leaving the gate for the eighth race when 59-1 Deer Run bobbled. By the time he took off Soup Spoon, there were no jockeys left to handle the call.

Deer Run made the pace in the eighth, but tired after a half-mile to finish last under an uncomfortable-looking Chavez. The injury was not believed to be serious.

Soup Spoon, trained by Joe Lostritto, was listed at 30-1 on the track's morning line.
