Joey Franco, the 2003 California Horse of the Year and champion sprinter and older male, will enter stud at John C. Harris' Harris Farms near Coalinga, Calif. He will stand as the property of a syndicate for a fee of $3,000. Shares are currently being offered.

Campaigned in the colors of his breeder, Jerry Frankel, 5-year-old Joey Franco (Avenue of Flags--Susan Powter, by Native Prospector) was retired after winning eight of 17 starts and earning $635,091 (The Blood-Horse of July 31, page 4046). His big win came in the Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Invitational Handicap (gr. I).

"He's an extremely handsome and well-made individual," said trainer Darrell Vienna. "The elements of character, constitution, and ability were so well blended that it wasn't a surprise that he became a top-class performer."

Harris added, "I feel this is a great addition to our stallion roster. He is a very attractive horse that showed sensational abilities at middle distances. We plan to breed some of our best mares to him."
