Thirty-Year-Old Captain James Dead

Pensioned California stallion Captain James, who was a group II winner in England, was euthanized Sept 10. The 30-year-old son of Captain's Gig resided at Dinesh Maniar's Getaway Thoroughbred Farm near Romoland, Calif.

Captain James, a Turn-to grandson, captured the 1978 Waterford Crystal Mile (Eng-II) and won or placed in five Irish stakes, including the group I Joe McGrath Memorial Stakes. His best stakes winner, group I winner Creag-an-Sgor, was from one of his European crops. Creag-an-Sgor won the William Hill Middle Park (Eng-I) and Clerical Medical Greenham (Eng-III) Stakes.

Captain James' best U.S.-bred was What a Diplomat, who won the 1988 San Rafael Stakes (gr. II). Captain James, who was produced from the Alcide mare Aliceva, sired a total of six stakes winners.
