Badge to Stand at Hartley/De Renzo

Graded stakes winner Badge, who ran third in the 1999 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds near Ocala, Fla. The son of Air Forbes Won raced for James Vena's Southbelle Stable, winning five of 12 starts and earning of $380,630. He will stand as the property of Vena for $3,500. Badge was retired after he came out of a Dec. 29 workout at Gulfstream Park with a filling in the suspensory ligament in his right front leg.

Badge, who was produced from the Raja's Revenge mare Revenge Time, won the 1999 Gotham (gr. III) and Best Turn Stakes. In the Preakness, his rally from the far back fell about 1 1/2 lengths short of winner Charismatic. Badge, who was named after a song made famous by the British rock group Cream, also finished third in the 2000 General George Stakes (gr. II).
