Twilight Road Winds Way to Miami Mile Win

Donamire Farm's Twilight Road ran down the leaders in late stretch to win the $150,000 Miami Mile Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Calder Race Course Saturday.

The 7-year-old chestnut gelding, who pushed his career earnings to $621,557, covered the mile turf test in 1:39 2/5 on a yielding course with Phil Teator in the irons.

"Turning for home, I felt like I had a lot of horse and I was just waiting for the right moment to try to get him there (finish line) first," Teator said.

Hear No Evil set the pace until the final sixteenth of mile when four rivals passed him in a close finish. Twilight Road finished a half-length ahead of Gold Dollar, who was three-quarters of length in front of Paradise Dancer in third. Wire Bound completed the superfecta just a head behind, while Hear No Evil had to settle for fifth place.

David Fawkes trains Twilight Road, a Kentucky-bred son of Cahill Road. Teator rode the winner for the fourth time in as many starts at Calder. They have now combined for three victories at Calder this season, including the Memorial Day Handicap (gr. III) and the Thats Our Buck overnight stakes.

"He just loves Florida," Fawkes said. "He's done everything right since he got here. The thing about him is that he wants to be covered up, which didn't happen the last time he tried turf."

The 5-1 third choice in the field of nine, Twilight Road paid $12.60, $7.20 and $5.60. Gold Dollar returned $11.20 and $7.20. Paradise Dancer was $9.20 to show.

Unbridels King, the slight 3-1 favorite, finished eighth.
