Soviet Song overtook the strong pacesetter Attraction 40 yards from the wire to register her third consecutive group I win in the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes (Ire-I) at Leopardstown on Saturday.
With Johnny Murtagh aboard, the victory aboard the 4-year-old filly at odds of 8-13 gave her a second win over her stellar younger rival. With less than two furlongs to go, Attraction, ridden by Kevin Darley, was four lengths in the clear and appeared to be coasting to her ninth victory.
But Elite Racing Club's Soviet Song, a daughter of Marju, was hard-ridden by Murtagh over the final furlong and she responded with a half-length tally. She completed the mile on good to firm going in 1:36.82.
Soviet Song defeated Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes (Eng-I), ending the brilliant undefeated filly's eight-race winning streak. She also captured the Sussex Stakes (Eng-I) iin an upset in her string of victories. Trainer James Fanshawe was understandably happy.
"It was touch and go, and for a while I didn't think that she was going to make it, but she is a great battler," he told Racing Post
. "While I couldn't say that the race exactly went to plan, it was a big help to have Johnny Murtagh aboard with his great knowledge of the track here".
Attraction went to the front early and seemed to have it all her way. But Soviet Song kept to the task over the final quarter of a mile and eventually edged in front. Phantom Wind was five lengths behind in third.
Soviet Song could go to Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Eng-I) Sept. 25 at Ascot, Fanshawe said. "I would love to have a go at the QE II, but I suppose that it may come a bit soon. We'll just have to see how she comes out of this."
He had nothing but praise for Attraction.
"She ran up an outstanding sequence, and is a terrific filly. Her style of running means that she is always there to be shot at, but she very nearly pulled it off today."
