Blackdoun Goes For Del Mar Derby Sweep

Blackdoun heads a field of 10 3-year-old grass runners who will go to the post Monday in the 60th edition of the $400,000 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) at 1 1/8 miles.

Going for a sweep of the season's top 3-year-old races, Blackdoun drew the outside post with jockey Corey Nakatani for trainer Julio Canani. Blackdoun already has won a division of the Oceanside Stakes at a mile on the turf on Del Mar's opening day and the 1 1/16-mile La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIT) on the grass Aug. 14.

Back from the La Jolla to battle Blackdoun again are runner-up Semi Lost and the third, fourth and fifth-place finishers – Bedmar, Sujimoto and Laura's Lucky Boy. Returning from Blackdoun's Oceanside division is runner-up Terroplane and third-place Lucky Pulpit.

New shooters in the race are Place Cowboy and Fast and Furious, who are making their North American debuts for trainers James Cassidy and Ron McAnally. Toasted has made his last two starts at Arlington Park, where he finished first in the Arlington Classic (gr. IIIT) July 3 and third, beaten a length, in the American Derby (gr. IIT) July 24.

All will carry 124 pounds.
