William G. Clark, who bred champion sprinter Chou Croute in partnership, died Aug. 30 in Lexington after a lengthy illness. He was 80.

Clark, who formerly owned Highlands Farm near Midway, Ky., bred Chou Croute with E.V. Benjamin. A daughter of Lt. Stevens, Chou Croute won six stakes her championship season in 1972 and two others during her career.

Clark also figured in a bit of Kentucky Derby history. He bought Venetian Way and Lincoln Road for Isaac Blumberg's Sunny Blue Farm. Venetian Way won the 1960 Run for the Roses, and Lincoln Road ran second in the 1958 Derby and Preakness to Tim Tam.
