Freedom Acres Inc. kept it all in the family in the $100,000 Jersey Breeders' Turf Highweight at Monmouth Park on Sunday, with their American Freedom beating his younger brother Freedom's Honor by a half-length before the New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival Day crowd of 14,066.
A 6-year-old gelding by Marquetry
, American Freedom covered the mile and a sixteenth on firm turf in 1:43 and returned $3.20, $3.40 and $2.40. Freedom's Honor, a 4-year-old gelding by Deerhound, coupled in the wagering with American Freedom was another three lengths ahead of Catechol, who completed a $10.80 exacta and paid $2.80 to show.
Ridden by Jose Velez Jr. and trained by Jamie Woodington, American Freedom recorded his ninth win in 32 starts and has earned $367,130 for his owner.
The New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival celebrated its second anniversary on Sunday with an entire race card filled with New Jersey-bred horses. There were four races worth $100,000.
In other stakes action, Gwendolyn Kershak's Totally Precious
, ridden by Joe Bravo, took command in mid-stretch and held for a 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Eleven North Handicap.
Trained by James P. Connor III, Totally Precious covered six furlongs over a fast main track in 1:11 flat and returned $4.80, $3 and $2.20. Eastern Gale completed a $37 exacta and paid $6.60 and $2.60. Whoop's Ah Daisy, $2.40, was another three lengths back in third.
The Eleven North victory marked the fifth in 21 starts for the 5-year-old mare by Northern Idol. She has now earned $187,580 for her owner.
New Farm's Uphill Skier
opened up daylight turning for home before posting a 2 1/4-length win in the $100,000 Jersey Girl Handicap.
Ridden by Stewart Elliott for trainer Ben Perkins Jr., Uphill Skier covered the mile and 70 yards in 1:44 1/5 and returned $6, $4.20 and $3.80. Cigno D'Oro rallied for the place and paid $8.40 and $6 and completed a $57.40 exacta. Sonia's Song was another 2 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $10.40.
Uphill Skier racked up her seventh win from 14 starts. The 4-year-old filly by Appealing Skier from the Kris S. mare Resilient Kris has now earned $258,050.
Janet Laszlo and Joe Pierce Jr.'s Quiet Desperation
took command at the eighth pole in posting a two-length win in the $100,000 Colts Neck Handicap.
Trained by Pierce, Quiet Desperation, with Eibar Coa aboard, covered six furlongs in 1:10 and returned $5.80, $3.20 and $2.40 as the favorite. Our Wildcat held for second and returned $4.40 and $2.60 and completed a $29.40 exacta. Upturn was a nose back in third and paid $2.20.
Quiet Desperation chalked up his 8th win in 30 starts on Sunday.
