Maryland Racing Shifts to Timonium

The Maryland State Fair at Timonium will host eight days of Thoroughbred racing, featuring two stakes Aug. 28 through Labor Day, Sept. 6.

The two stakes for Maryland-breds are the $50,000 Alma North and the $50,000 Taking Risk Stakes.

Jockeys expected to ride at the fair meet include Travis Dunkelberger, a perennial leader at the meeting, plus Maryland stalwarts Steve Hamilton, Erick Rodriguez, Jozbin Santana, and Charles Town habitués Larry Reynolds, Anthony Mawing and Mark Rosenthal.

Eric Camacho or Chip Van Hassel could emerge as Maryland's new "kid" at Timonium, which often showcases up-and-coming apprentice riders.

The five-furlong ring has doubled as a busy training center this summer while major rebuilding continues at Laurel Park.

Live racing will be conducted on eight days of the 11-day fair. Dark days will be Monday. Aug. 30 and Tuesday, Aug. 31. Full card simulcasting from Saratoga and other major racing centers will be presented daily in the grandstand dining room.
