Rex Ellsworth's homebred Swaps raced to a world-record time of 1:39 flat for 1 1/16 miles when he carried 130 pounds to victory in the Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood Park on June 23, 1956. The 2 3/4-length victory was the second in a five-race win streak for the California-bred. At the end of the year, Swaps was retired with a career record of 19 wins from 25 starts and earnings of $848,900, then fourth on the all-time earnings list.
