James Weigel's homebred Dream of Summer earned a hard-fought neck victory over Barbara Orr Satuday in the 6 ½-furlong Rancho Bernardo Handicap (gr. III) at Del Mar. The even-money favorite, now a winner of four straight races, covered the distance in 1:15.85.
Trained by Juan Garcia, Dream of Summer battled on the lead while outside of Barbara Orr throughout the race and the two carved out solid fractions of :21.93, :44.29, and 1:09.17. A Cal-bred daughter of Siberian Summer out of the Skywalker mare Mary's Dream, Dream of Summer is three-for-three on the year and has won six of eight career starts and has one second. She entered the Rancho Bernardo off her first stakes score, a 3 ½-length victory in the seven-furlong A Gleam Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park. In the A Gleam, she toted 114 pounds. In the Rancho Bernardo, she carried highweight of 118. She was ridden by Mike Smith.
Dream of Summer returned $4, $2.80, and $2.20. Barbara Orr, who was sent off at 5-1, paid $4.40 and $3.40, while Cyber Slew paid $2.80 to show. The $1 exacta, 6-4, returned $8.90.
