Well-known California owners and breeders Bob and Beverly Lewis plan to sell nearly all of their broodmares this November at the Keeneland breeding stock auction.
The group of 18 will include grade II winner and Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) runner-up Santa Catarina (Unbridled -- Purrfectly), in foal to
A. P. Indy; stakes winner Storm Beauty (
Storm Cat -- Stick to Beauty), carrying a full sibling to grade III-placed Renaissance Lady (by. A. P. Indy); Renaissance Lady, in foal to Exclusive Quality; and grade II-placed Unbridled Beauty (Unbridled's Song -- Dreamscape), in foal to Tale of the Cat.
"We're really in the racing business, but when you're in the racing business, you back into the breeding business whether you like it or not," Lewis said. "The numbers in our broodmare band had gotten to be too strong, so we decided to reduce them."
The mares will be offered in the Denali Stud and Taylor Made Sales Agency consignments.
Lewis said he and his wife are retaining champion Serena's Song and two barren mares. A 9-year-old daughter of
Rahy, Serena's Song is the dam of English group I winner Sophisticat and multiple stakes winner Serena's Tune.
Asked whether he will buy horses this year at the yearling auctions, Bob Lewis replied: "I'll be selling yearlings and I'll be at the (Keeneland September) sale; we'll just have to see how it plays out from there."
