Imperialism, the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) third-place finisher, could show up next in the grassy Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) on Sept. 6, according to trainer Kristin Mulhall
The decision depends on how he comes along in his training, she said.
A planned half-mile workout for the son of Langfuhr
Thursday could give an indication of whether the big gray colt could get ready for the 1 1/8-mile race. Mulhall, who gallops the horse each day, said he is acting well and seems ready to get down to serious training.
"I'm not going to push him," the 22-year-old conditioner said, "but he's doing well, and the Derby is not out of the question." She added that if Thursday's work on the main track goes well, he'd work on the turf a couple of times prior to the Derby.
As for taking to the turf, Mulhall said, "Oh, I think he'll like it."
