English Trainer Alec Stewart Dead

Alec Stewart, trainer of English and French champion Mtoto, died Aug. 4 at his home in Newmarket, England, after a long battle with cancer, according to the Racing Post. He was 49.Stewart, who held a trainer's license since 1983, saddled Mtoto to group I victories in the 1988 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and consecutive runnings (1987-88) of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes. In France, Mtoto missed winning the Ciga Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) by a neck.In North America, Stewart's charge Mutamam won the Canadian International Stakes (Can-IT). His other top runners included miler Waajib and distance runner Braashee, plus Wagon Master.
