Rain Impacts Saratoga Opener

The opening day card at Saratoga on Wednesday has been impacted by the large amount of rain in upstate New York Monday and Tuesday.

New York Racing Association officials announced that the three races scheduled for the turf on Wednesday -- the first, fourth, and seventh -- will now be run on the main track, which will likely be listed as "sloppy." The first and seventh had each drawn 16 entries, with 11 in the fourth race.

With racing daily, except Tuesday of each week, the 36-day Saratoga meet will be highlighted by the $1-million Travers Stakes on Aug. 28.

One change in this year's Saratoga schedule is cancellation of the Saratoga Special and the Adirondack Stakes for 2-year-old males and fillies, respectively. NYRA officials said the action was taken to bolster field sizes in the other 2-year-old stakes at the meet.
