(from Colonial Downs report)Great Lake Stable's Northern Babe splashed through the slop to win the $50,000 Tippett Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths at Colonial Downs Sunday.
The final time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was 1:05.76. Madison Dollie held on to be a clear third, more than three lengths behind Heartful Hero.
Northern Babe broke sharply and was briefly on the lead before settling behind horses under jockey Eric Camacho. Heartful Hero and Madison Dollie went by Northern Babe to contest the early pace. Heartful Hero was a half-length in front of 3-5 favorite Madison Dollie after an opening quarter in :22.46.
Heartful Hero maintained her half-length lead around the turn as Northern Babe saved ground on the rail. Putting away Madison Dollie exiting the turn, Heartful Hero left a huge hole for Northern Babe to come through on the rail. Those two dueled for the lead in upper stretch as they pulled away from the rest of the field. Northern Babe pulled clear in midstretch and was able to hold Heartful Hero at bay.
The Tippett win was Northern Babe's second from three career starts. Tim Salzman trains the 2-year-old Polish Numbers filly.
