Multiplication Dies of Apparent Heart Attack

The Bob Baffert-trained Multiplication, who won the Mike Lee Stakes for owner Jim McIngvale at Belmont Park June 26, died of an apparent heart attack after a workout Saturday at Belmont.

The 3-year-old son of Subordination collapsed as he was walking back to his barn after turning in a six-furlong breeze in a bullet 1:11.56, Daily Racing Form reported. Dr. Celeste Kunz, the chief examining veterinarian for the New York Racing Association, said the colt appeared to suffer a massive heart attack, the paper said.

Multiplication had been scheduled to run in the New York Derby at Fingerlakes Saturday. In the 7-furlong Mike Lee – for 3-year-old New York breds – he drifted out badly in the final furlong after dueling through testing fractions of :22 1/5 and :44 1/5, to win in a time of 1:22 2/5.

Multiplication, who also won a maiden race at Hollywood Park, had two victories and a second-place finish in four starts with earnings of $102,740.
