Sheikh Mohammed, who called champion Dubai Millennium his best horse ever, experienced a special thrill July 8 in the Weatherbys Superlative Stakes (Eng-III) at Newmarket when the stallion's homebred son, Dubawi, became his sire's first stakes winner. Racing for Sheikh Mohammed in the Godolphin colors, Dubawi beat 11 rivals and scored by a half-length under Lanfranco Dettori over Henrik in 1:26.48 for the seven furlongs.
Dubawi, who was bred in Ireland by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation and is trained by Saeed bin Suroor, earned £23,200 ($43,029) of the £40,000 total purse ($74,188). He not only was Dubai Millennium's first stakes winner, but also his first winner, capturing his debut June 4 at Goodwood.
Dubawi is the first of two foals from Italian champion and North American grade II turf winner Zomaradah (by Deploy). The once-beaten Dubai Millenium (Seeking the Gold
--Colorado Dancer, by Shareef Dancer) was a champion in England and Dubai. He died of grass sickness in April of 2001 in his first year at stud.
