Local Star Chatter Chatter Tops Azalea Field

Florida-based horses have their best opportunity to claim a graded stake in Saturday's "Summit of Speed" at Calder Race Course in the $300,000 Azalea Breeders' Cup (gr.III) for 3-year-old fillies. Franks Farm's Chatter Chatter and Eugene and Laura Melnyk's French Village are solid contenders in the field of eight contesting six furlongs.

Chatter Chatter makes her first start of the season in the Azalea with Joe Bravo in the saddle. Trained by Marty Wolfson, the homebred daughter of Lost Soldier enjoyed her defining moment in the $400,000 My Dear Girl Division of the Florida Stallion Stakes in October, scoring by nearly 20 lengths.

Chatter Chatter came back to win the Joe O'Farrell Juvenile Fillies on Florida Million day but finished a dull fifth as the 2-to-5 favorite in the Three Ring Stakes on Dec. 13, her last start. She had chips removed from both knees thereafter.

French Village was the early season leader of the 2-year-old filly division at Calder last year, winning her first three starts, including the Desert Vixen and Susan's Girl divisions of the FSS before finishing up the track in the My Dear Girl.

Trainer Bill White brought the chestnut daughter of Jules back in a six-furlong overnight stakes here on June 15 and she looked strong winning by five lengths under Cornelio Velasquez, who gets a return call in the Azalea.

Completing the field for the Azalea are Jack Brooks' Boston Express, Padua Stable's Dazzle Me, G.W.M. Farms' Anna Em, Aaron and Marie Jones' Frenchglen, Edmund Gann's Reforest and Centaur Farm's Special Report.
