Grade II winner Boston Common, who won or placed in 13 stakes since being claimed by Richard Englander for $50,000, was euthanized after suffering a condylar fracture in his right front leg. The injury took place as the 5-year-old Boston Harbor gelding was approaching the quarter pole during a 5 1/2-furlong claiming race on turf June 27 at Hollywood Park. In an unfortunate circumstance, Boston Common was claimed by trainer Leonard Duncan for $62,500 for Minichiello Fashion Stable.

"He was a cool horse; sort of a barn mascot," said Jeff Mullins, who trained Boston Common for Englander since last fall. "We weren't trying to lose him. We just wanted to get him some easy company."

Boston Common raced once for his breeder, William T. Young's Overbrook Farm, before Englander claimed him. During his four years of racing, Boston Common won the El Conejo (gr. III) and Oakland Handicaps for Mullins and the 2002 Jerome Handicap (gr. II) and Jersey Shore Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) while trained by Mike Pino.

Boston Common, who was produced from the Mr. Prospector mare Especially, captured a dozen of 33 starts and earned $609,317.
