Jockey Moran Wins First Race Since 1995

Mike Moran, who retired from riding in 1995, won his first race in nine years Friday night at Hollywood Park, guiding 19-1 shot Quiten Boy to victory.

The 44-year-old Moran, whose 2,079 prior victories came in Ohio, Illinois, Florida, New York and New Jersey, collected his first-ever win at Hollywood Park.

He told the Pasadena Star-News that he has been galloping horses since December while working as a jockey's agent. He brought apprentice Kevin Krigger to Southern California in 2002. He said he weighed 160 pounds when he started working in the mornings and quickly lost 30 pounds.

"I just got on a good diet and the weight was peeling off,' Moran said. "I love to ride. I was a leading jockey eight or nine times.'

Quiten Boy, owned and trained by Monte M. Gomes, was Moran's sixth mount since returning to competition. His wife, Christi, met him in the winner's circle after Quiten Boy, a 4-year-old gelding, completed a three-length victory in a $15,000 maiden claiming event. The winner returned $40.80 to win.

A former leading rider at Thistledown and Tampa Bay Downs, Moran's biggest win came in the 1982 Jim Beam Spiral Stakes aboard 39-1 Good n' Dusty.
